I love being a Chinese wedding photographer because I can provide natural wedding photography to Chinese couples all over the country. The photos below were taken way back in 2014 when I first started offering my services as a professional photographer. The groom, Lon, was an old school acquaintance of mine and thanks to staying in touch via social media, he heard of my new photography business and asked if I would shoot his wedding.
This traditional Chinese wedding was one of three occasions on which Lon and his wife, Mayo, chose to celebrate their marriage. Lon had met Mayo while living in Japan, her native country, and so they had enjoyed a Japanese style, English style and now Chinese style celebrations. I had also lived in Japan for a few years so it was nice to see to families of very different cultures be united through Lon and Mayo’s meeting.
Our newly married couple had opted for a traditional Chinese tea ceremony at Lon’s parents’ house in Chester, North West of the UK. This involved the drinking of tea with Lon’s parents and other senior members of his family, aided by Lon’s elder sisters. There was also lots of giving of gifts, all of which carried significance in Chinese culture, including wishes of wealth and prosperity, along with healthy offspring.
After the ceremony and some relaxing in the garden with family and friends, we all moved onto a large Chinese restaurant which had been hired out by Lon’s family. Over 300 guests arrived, all with gifts for the happily married couple. Lon mentioned to me that in fact, he only had a passing acquaintance with many of the guests, but that it was important in Chinese culture that his family invite most of the members of their community, along with his father’s business contacts.
Everyone, including me, enjoyed some very tasty authentic Chinese food, and then it was time for the newlyweds to walk around each table where they would be the centre of attention of some vigorous toasting! Soon after there was the cake-cutting, and then a glass of champagne together!
Many thanks to Lon and Mayo for having me along as their Chinese wedding photographer! It was fabulous experience to early into my professional photography career!
